Big name players moving to the Middle East were expected to dominate, but that hasn’t been the case so far.
The entry of the Saudi Pro League into the transfer market in 2023 may have changed football forever. Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to join Al-Nassr in January opened the door, and Europe’s best players have since poured into the Middle East to experience a “new challenge” and become even richer in the process.
Much of the debate surrounding this major migration has centered on off-field considerations such as transfer fees, salaries and business potential. While little thought was given to the effect this influx of talent could have on the field.
However, the season has finally started and the performance of these dazzling newcomers has been nothing short of amazing. Notable signings like Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez were expected to take the Pro League by storm. In contrast, European imports have had mixed success.
Perhaps more surprisingly, some of them have struggled to get their way in the dressing room, allaying fears that Pro League clubs would submit to their new signings’ every whim.
