National Hockey League (NHL) Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league is working with the players’ association to create an international tournament. His words convey official site NHL.
“So if we do an international tournament in 2025, then we do the 2026 Olympics, the 2028 World Cup, the 2030 Olympics, the 2032 World Cup, etc. That’s our goal.
The 2025 tournament does not have to follow the World Cup format. Obviously, it will be aimed predominantly at NHL players.
We recently had a meeting with the IIHF and IOC where we talked about participation in the 2026 Olympic Games and what the World Cup would look like on a regular basis,” reports NHL website Daily.
Recall that the NHL has not taken its players to the Olympic Games since 2014. The hockey players of the last North American league participated in the 2014 Games held in Sochi. The last international tournament, in which the main stars of the NHL participated, took place in 2016. Then in Toronto, under the auspices of the NHL, the World Cup was held, the winner of which was the Canadian team. Players who fail to qualify for the NHL playoffs or who are eliminated in the early stages enter the World Championship. Many hockey players refuse to participate in this tournament.
