As part of the Russian team, Valieva won the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. On February 8, after the results of the team tournament, the organizers of the Games canceled the award ceremony, as the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) temporarily suspended Valieva for a doping test she passed during the Russian Championship. 2022 tested positive for the drug trimetazidine, banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The exit panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed the athlete to participate in the individual tournament, provided that if Valieva received the medal, the prize was not awarded. During the CAS meeting, Valieva’s side voiced the version with the grandfather’s medicine.
The athlete took fourth place in the individual tournament, which allowed the Russian Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova, as well as the Japanese Kaori Sakomoto to take their prizes.
On June 22, the press service of the Court of Arbitration for Sports reported that hearings on the Valieva case will be held in four days, from September 26 to 29.
