Former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of sexually assaulting hundreds of underage athletes, has been stabbed to death at Coleman II federal prison in Florida, NBC News reported.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons confirmed to EFE that an inmate had been stabbed at the federal prison in question on Sunday, but said it could not name the attacker for privacy reasons.
Nassar, a union leader for Coleman II prison workers in western Florida, told NBC News that he was stabbed in the neck, chest and back, resulting in collapse of his lung.
Joe Rojas, chairman of the Local 506 union, said his condition is stable.
Lawrence Gerard Nassar, 59, who is scheduled to be released from prison in 2068 according to his prison record, spent 18 years as a doctor for the USA gymnastics team and also served at the University of Michigan.
He was sentenced to life in prison in several cases in 2017 and 2018 for sexual abuse of underage athletes and possession of child pornography.
In 2022, several US Olympic gymnasts, including medalist Simone Biles, demanded more than a billion dollars in damages from the FBI for not arresting Larry Nassar.
Earlier, in April 2022, 13 alleged victims of Nassar’s harassment had requested $130 million from the FBI for failing to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct against the doctor.
In 2013, the United States Gymnastics Federation reported to the federal agency that three athletes said they had been harassed by Nassar, but the FBI decided not to conduct an official investigation.
The doctor was arrested in 2016 following an investigation by Michigan State University Police, where Nassar was a doctor.
The university agreed to pay $500 million in damages to more than 300 women who accused Nassar of harassment in May 2018.
In December 2021, the gymnasts also reached a $380 million court settlement with the federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee.
