Tennis player Daniil Medvedev admitted that he liked the reaction of Belarus representative Victoria Azarenka to her refusal to shake hands with Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
“I think the booing of Azarenka is a big misunderstanding. Shame on Vika because she lost in the tie-break at 9:11. Brutal to anyone who lost in the tiebreaks in the third set. I really liked her reaction at the press conference, she respected Svitolina’s decision not to shake hands. All they saw was Vika’s refusal to shake hands. That’s why I think they booed him,” Medvedev said at a post-match press conference.
Svitolina and Azarenka did not shake hands after the head-to-head match at Wimbledon. Fans booed the Belarusian athlete. Svitolina said that the Professional Tennis Players Association (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) should issue a statement that Ukrainian players will not shake hands with Russians and Belarusians.
Wimbledon started on July 3 and will run until July 16. The tournament’s prize fund is £44,700,000.
Wimbledon winners in 2022 are Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) and Novak Djokovic (Serbia).
Previously a Davis Cup finalist announced Czech Legechka’s refusal from the match with Medvedev.
