We tell you what happens if there is a draw in the group stage and what the tiebreak criteria are in the 2023 Women’s World Cup
The Women’s World Cup will be in its ninth edition this summer. Australia and New Zealand are the two countries hosting this edition, in which for the first time there will be 32 participating teams, divided into eight groups, the first two of which will reach the round of 16.
But what happens if there are teams that finish on points in the group stage of the World Cup?
In the event that two or more teams achieve the same points, two criteria are taken into account: firstly, the one with the highest goal difference ranks better and, if necessary – if the parties involved are tied in that first criterion – whoever has scored, most goals are used.
In case of permanent equality, the positions are determined on the basis of:
- Greater number of points scored in group stage matches between the teams in question.
- Highest goal difference in group stage matches between the teams in question.
- Greater number of goals in direct confrontations in the group.
- Greater number of points obtained for sporting behavior according to the number of yellow and red cards received: the yellow card is one point less, the red card for a double yellow card, three points less, the direct red card, four points less and one yellow card and card immediately red, five points less.
- Lottery.
