The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) has suspended athletes from Russia and Belarus from competitions under its auspices, and also suspended their membership in the organization of the national federations of these countries. It has been reported Inside the Games.
It was noted that the decision was taken with a majority of votes at the EFC congress held in Krakow, Poland, upon the suggestion of the President of the Ukrainian Fencing Federation, Mikhail Ilyashev.
At the same time, the EFC’s decision is seen as a protest against the actions of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) allowing Russians and Belarusians to participate in their competitions.
The sanctions of the European Fencing Confederation mean that Russian and Belarusian athletes cannot be members of the organization’s executive committee or commissions, and also cannot participate in competitions between athletes under the age of 23.
The restrictions will not apply to adult continental competitions held under the auspices of the FIE.
Recall that this year the FIE decided to extradite Russian and Belarusian fencers. It will come into effect from the second half of April 2023.
