Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin has instructed the government to submit proposals for the BRICS Sports Games to be held in Russia in 2024 and to be held by 1 July.
The relevant order is published on: Kremlin website. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was appointed responsible for the execution.
On May 2, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin proposed hosting the BRICS Games on the territory of the Russian Federation.
“We think this is particularly relevant given the possibility of expanding the BRICS format in terms of the number of countries,” said Matytsin.
Recall that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) advised international federations at the end of February 2022 to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions. Subsequently, international competitions planned to be held in Russia were canceled or postponed.
Most international federations followed the IOC’s recommendations regarding the expulsion of representatives from Russia and Belarus. Only a few organizations allowed Russians and Belarusians to start with a neutral status.
At a meeting of the IOC executive committee on March 28, it was recommended that the Russians be allowed a neutral status if the athletes did not actively support the hostilities. Athletes representing law enforcement and armed forces will not be allowed to compete.
