Azerbaijani grandmaster Teymur Radjabov spoke about the possible end of the career of the former competitor of the world champion Russian Sergey Karyakin. Radjabov emphasized that although Karjakin is not currently participating in major tournaments, it is too early to talk about his departure from chess.
“Still, I can’t say that he quit chess. It is better to ask him directly what kind of activities he is engaged in. He still remains in chess, will play in the team championship of Russia. I’ve never heard of the decision not to play, so I assume it will continue. He has a special case, but Karjakin’s possible departure from world chess would be a loss in all respects, Radjabov told socialbites.ca.
Karjakin was unable to participate in the 2022 Candidates’ Tournament as he was disqualified for his support of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. After his suspension ended, Karjakin did not return to major competitions, focusing on social and administrative activities. He fought for the presidency of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) at the end of 2022, but lost in the election to the current head of the organization, Andrei Filatov. In 2023, Karjakin headed the Moscow Region Chess Federation (FSHP).
formerly Radjabov ConfessedHad he known beforehand that former world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen had refused to fight for the title, he would have played in the candidates tournament otherwise.
