Latvian tennis player Elena Ostapenko argued with referee Maria Cicak during the match played with Russian Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournament held in Rome, Italy.
The incident occurred in favor of Kasatkina with the score of 4:2 in the second set of the match. Ostapenko objected to the referee’s decision to count points in favor of Russia, stating that the ball went out of bounds. In the episode, the video of which was posted on the Twitter account The Tennis Letter, the athlete shouted, “You will not referee my matches again.”
The match ended with Ostapenko’s victory with the scores of 6:4, 4:6, 6:0. He moved on to the next stage of the tournament, where he will play the winner of the match between Paula Badosa (Spain) and Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic).
Kasatkina lost one spot in the WTA rankings last week, slipping from eighth to ninth. Ostapenko takes 20th place in the ranking.
