The 26-year-old Russian won the weight category up to 100 kg. He defeated two-time Olympic champion Lukasz Krpalek from the Czech Republic in the final.

Recall that the International Judo Federation (IJF) at the end of April allows athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions in neutral status.
At a meeting of the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on March 28, it was recommended that the Russians be allowed to have a neutral status, if the athletes are not actively engaged in supporting hostilities. Athletes representing law enforcement and armed forces will not be allowed to compete.
