Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi has lost his second place in the updated ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Now the Russian is in third place.
First place continues to be occupied by Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who this year refused the match against Nepomniachtchi for the chess crown. He was removed from the second line of the Russians by the Frenchman Alireza Firouzja.
Today, Ian Nepomniachtchi lost to French representative Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the fifth round of the first stage of the Grand Chess Tour in Bucharest (Romania).
On April 30, Ian Nepomniachtchi lost to China’s Ding Liren in a tie-break in a chess crown match.
It is worth noting that in the last match for the chess crown, Nepomniachtchi lost to the Norwegian representative Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian held this title for 10 years (from 2013 to 2023).
Ian Nepomniachtchi won the title match against world champion Magnus Carlsen after winning the 2022 Candidates’ Tournament.
