The Norwegian scores goals for fun at Manchester City, but is still a long way from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s best campaign.
Erling Haland it’s a phenomenon. No one can argue with that. He Manchester City knew he was going to sign a top tier striker when he paid Borussia Dortmund £51 million to sign the Norwegian in 2022, but they never imagined he would be this prolific.
Haaland scored his 50th goal in all competitions for City against Fulham on Sunday. It was his 34th in the Premier League, in which he equaled the all-time record of one season Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.
The City-killer will undoubtedly get a few more before the end of the season, out of the team Jose Guardiola still looking for a hat-trick, but unlikely to come close to breaking the all-time record for most goals scored in all competitions in a single campaign in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.
That honor is still held by a certain Lionel Messi, who scored 73 goals for Barcelona during the 2011–12 season.
Guardiola was managing Barca at the time and had a simple message for the football world as he tried to understand what Messi was doing.
“Don’t write about him, don’t try to describe him. Look,” he said enthusiastically.
Messi’s individual achievements that year will never be overshadowed, and his record is all the more remarkable for playing in a disjointed Barca squad and reaching the end of an era.
Haaland deserves all the praise he gets in Manchester, but Messi was on another planet.
