Chelsea crest: history, meaning and what you need to know
The club was founded in 1905 by brothers Joseph and Gus Mears, who bought Stamford Bridge athletics stadium in the Fulham district and redeveloped it into a football ground. The brothers tried unsuccessfully to buy Fulham and decided on March 10, 1905 to form their own club.
Between 1905 and 1952, the club used as its coat of arms the image of one of the pensioners of the Royal Hospital Army Veterans Corps. After 47 years, Chelsea Football Club changed shields and started using the intertwined acronym: CFC. A year later, the winged lion holding the cane of the abbots of Westminster arrived which has become characteristic and they decided to adopt it as it is present in the arms of the district of Chelsea. The image of the lion was framed in a circle with the club’s name and three red roses, the emblem of England.
34 years later, again in 1986, the club changed again. He kept the winged lion but with a new design and blue color and placed it again next to the club’s initials. The logo stayed that way until 2004 when they adopted the current design, which modernized the shield used between 1953 and 1986 and which continues to this day.
