The matches are played over 90 minutes and if they end in a draw, extra time and penalty kicks follow; there is no tiebreaker duel.

The Copa del Rey 2021-2022 will continue with the format released in 2019/20: Since last year, they have started with 116 teams from different categories, integrating and giving more opportunities to modest clubs that had never had the chance to participate in the tournament.

As in the previous rounds, there is no tie-breaker and, in the event of a tie at the end of 90 minutes, the matches will go into 30-minute overtime. If a tie still remains, penalties will follow until there is a winner.

To gain access to the semi-finals, five one-game elimination rounds were played: first round, second round, round of 16, round of 16, and quarter-finals. The semi-finals are the only round to be played in a home and away format.

Tiebreak criteria: extra time and penalty

The matches are always played in the stadium of the team of the lower category and if they belong to the same category, it will be determined by the order of appearance of the teams in the draw.

Away goals are not worth double

Since there is no first and second leg, there is no double value of away goals if a match ends with a draw on the scoreboard.

This is how overtime and penalties work

The tie after 90 minutes would be broken with extra time of a further 30 minutes, 15 for each of the sides and without a break, and if the tie continues, the winner would be decided in a penalty shootout.
