Evgeny Bushmanov, former football player of Moscow Spartak, Russian national team and former coach of Spartak-2, shared his views on the new format of the Russian Football Cup in an interview with socialbites.ca.
“Honestly, there are so many matches in the Cup now that you don’t really remember who was completely eliminated and who kept fighting.
This experiment has benefits. Maybe there are downsides. We need the tournament to be over and then we’ll summarize the results and analyze what worked and what didn’t.
Advantages include that teams now play more matches, those who don’t always make it into the main roster practice the game, etc. There are many pluses. Let’s see what format the next season will be, what will our football leadership decide.”
Under the new format, from August to December, teams played the group stage, where the two best teams in the group advanced to the RPL Path playoff round and the third team to the Path of Regions playoff round.
From February to May, the RPL Path playoffs will continue, starting from the 1/4 finals. The teams play a knockout and the loser goes to the Regions Road.
In the cup final, the winners of RPL Road and Regions Road will compete among themselves. The decisive match will be played in June 2023.
