Former Lokomotiv forward and Russian national team Dmitry Sychev talked about the possible transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) under the auspices of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). According to him, this will not bring any benefit to Russian football. Sychev, who was watched by a number of Asian teams, emphasized that he initially supported the initiative on feelings, but later changed his mind because he knew the situation in Asian football from the inside and drew conclusions from his experience.
“I dived a little deeper into the situation, pushing the emotions away. I am familiar with Asian football first hand, have visited different countries and know the level of youth and adult football. There will be no growth, only more problems. It is very difficult with football in terms of understanding quality growth, quality competition, and keeping matches. This is such a deep subject that before we vainly say that we will go there – it is necessary to dive deep, not superficially. Then it will be no secret to anyone that we do not need to go there – otherwise we would have stepped back. We need to play matches, youth teams should hold international meetings with opponents, which is now possible, and expect a positive development in the international geopolitical arena, ”Sychev told socialbites.ca.
Russian teams and clubs have been banned from participating in official tournaments organized by the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Against this background, a possible problem of transit to Asia emerged at the end of 2022. No decision has been made at the moment, but the national team, which organizes friendly matches with Asian teams, may also participate in the Central Asian Football Federation tournament in June.
