Ukraine urges International Gymnastics Federation to join Russian boycott

Andriy Yermak, head of the office of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, telegraph channel He said he met with Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation, and urged him to join the boycott against Russian participation in the 2024 Olympics.

“I met with Morinari Watanabe, President of the International Gymnastics Federation… I urged Morinari Watanabe to support the initiative to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the 2024 Olympics,” Yermak wrote.

Recall that on February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made an appeal to sports federations and recommended that domestic and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.

At the IOC executive committee on March 28, it was recommended to allow Russians and Belarusians to have a neutral status, if the athletes are not actively engaged in supporting hostilities. Athletes representing law enforcement and armed forces will not be allowed to compete.

Former two-time Olympic snowboarding champion Vic Wylde commented The decision of the Ukrainian authorities to prohibit their athletes from participating in qualifying competitions with Russian athletes.
