Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov spoke about the conditions for the Russians to be admitted to Wimbledon 2023 at a press conference after the semi-final defeat of the Masters series tournament in Miami.
Russian athletes will be required to sign a declaration of neutrality, according to which athletes will be prohibited from displaying state symbols and making statements supporting any of them.
“If that’s all it takes, okay. You should probably follow the rules. That’s exactly what we’re doing now. Is that the neutrality? We haven’t had a flag since February last year. So we’re going to continue playing like other tournaments. And I don’t have a Russian sponsor anymore,” said Khachanov.
In the spring of 2022, Russian tennis players were denied participation in tournaments in the UK. In other competitions of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Russians play in a neutral status. It is worth noting that the decision of the LTA to prevent Russians from participating in their tournaments led to sanctions by the ATP and WTA.
Former Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev spoke About the decision to allow Russian athletes to participate in Wimbledon.
