Tottenham continues its self-destruction

No coach has spent a full season on the Spurs bench since Pocchetino’s departure.

By Juan Yague.

Seven coaches in fifteen years to win zero titles. Since the departure of Pocchetino without a coach who lasts an entire season. And with the last victim Antonio Conte, who played fifty-six matches of which he won thirty-two. And goodbye.

The reason was more the press conference after the game against Southampton than a sporting misstep. Although the trend was clearly downward. Knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United, losing to Milan in the Champions League without scoring a single goal after over three hours of play, and a defeat to the bottom team in the LIga. The equipment did not work very well. But also not bad.

Conte’s complaints to St. Mary’s were well founded. Although not intonated properly. Tottenham are a second team in England behind the real greats. Failing to capitalize on the club’s fame cut after years of hard work with Pocchetino, he sacked Mourinho before playing in the 2021 League Cup final (his only title option in three years) and couldn’t bear Nuno Espirito. Santo after beating the most difficult part of the calendar and have an affordable panorama in December and Christmas.

Decision making is erratic. Power of the club was transferred to Conte. And the purchases that the Italian wanted (Kulusevski, Bentancur, Romero, Perisic, Bissouma, Porro…). The one who didn’t want (Spence) was also thrown out. Everything went as he wanted and he failed. But also not to fail. Trying to justify the mediocrity of the course because of this inconstancy and the anger of the Italian coach at a press conference would be Daniel Levy’s latest outrage to shirk responsibilities and not diversify the blame.

As if that wasn’t enough, the transalpine coach’s replacement is his own assistant, Stellini. What message does that leave for the club and the fans? Is it a new project or not? Is something like that enough to guarantee fourth place or just try that will give access to the Champions League? The message is diffuse. This semi-transition does not seem to be the end of the cycle or the beginning of a new one. It is nothing.

And that, in an environment as wild and ultra-competitive as England’s, is the death of a club. Not only do their rivals in the top 6 continue to rebuild and/or improve themselves, other teams such as Newcastle United, Brighton&Hove Albion or Brentford wander around the top half of the table in case a miracle happens. And your planning and common sense can get you closer to it. It’s things that Tottenham don’t have.

Mourinho won titles in every team he was with except Tottenham. Same with count. Opportunity? It sounds insufficient to stick to such a simple explanation in the face of two dossiers of such weight. In this multitude of questions is Tottenham. Lots of questions, but nothing really.
