The tournament is played with 56 participating teams: 44 directly classified teams and 12 that participate in various parts of the competition from the Copa Libertadores.
The competition starts with a preparatory phase in which the four qualifiers from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela participate: the crosses are between teams from the same country in series of one match and the 16 winners have access to the group stage, where the six teams from Argentina and Brazil and four teams eliminated in stage 3 of the Libertadores will join.
The 32 qualifiers are divided into 8 zones of four teams each, all of which are measured against each other in first and second legs.
