FIFA officially announces changes to the 2026 World Cup format

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has officially announced changes to the format of the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.

“Based on extensive research that takes into account fair play principles, player well-being, logistical issues, commercial and sporting appeal, as well as the experience of national teams and fans, the FIFA Council unanimously approved the proposed changes to the format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup,”- in a press release published on according to official website FIFA.

Previously, the organization planned to divide the 48 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup into 16 groups of three teams each. It was decided that the first round matches of the tournament would be played in 12 groups consisting of 4 teams. The top two teams from each four and the top eight third-placed teams will advance to the 1/16 finals.

Recall that the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA) decided to exclude the Russian national team and all Russian clubs from participation in all competitions controlled by these organizations.
