Washington Capitals to hold ceremony in honor of Alexander Ovechkin

The Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL) will hold a ceremony to honor Russian team captain Alexander Ovechkin before the regular season game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 21.

The ceremony will celebrate the striker’s second-place finish on the NHL’s top scorers list in December 2022, beating the legendary Gordie Howe.

The celebration will reportedly be attended by Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, Gordie Howe’s son Mark and members of the Ovechkin family – his wife Anastasia, sons Sergey and Ilya, mother Tatyana and brother Mikhail. The striker will receive a special gift from the club, and the Washington players will go to the reel with the number 8 tees played under Russia.

In total, Ovechkin has scored 36 goals and made 25 assists in 61 league games this season. The 37-year-old Russian, who scored 816 goals during his career in the National Hockey League, is second on the all-time top scorer list behind Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals in the regular season.

For the 37-year-old Russian player, the 2022/23 season is already 18th in the international league. Ovechkin joined the Washington Capitals in 2005 and played for only one club throughout his NHL career.
