The Nervión team was eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 by the Turks in the round of 16 in a traumatic penalty shootout.
Memories of Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League tend to be more bitter than happy and one of those bad memories has a name: Fenerbahce. The Nervión team has only crossed the Ottoman team once until 2023, in which they meet again in the UEFA Europa League.
History of Sevilla against Fenerbahce: matches, statistics, wins, draws and losses
Sevilla crossed paths with Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 of the 2007–08 season. Manolo Jimenez’s team arrived at the crossroads as favorites after winning two UEFA Cups in a row and with most of that squad, they were first in their group ahead of Arsenal, Steaua Bucharest and Slavia Prague.
The lottery had given him a priori the most “easiest” rival in the draw, but the story did not have a happy ending. In the first leg in Istanbul was defeated by Sevilla 3-2 against the team Zico coached in a heavily contested match where the Turks took the lead 3 times with goals from Kezman, Lugano and Semih Şentürk after two draws with Sevilla.
In the second leg, the Sevilla team laid the groundwork for the comeback, leading 2-0 in the first ten minutes with goals from Dani Alves and Keita. However, Deivid closed the gap and his legs were shaking in spite of that Kanouté made it 3-1 and again the Brazilian forced extra time ten minutes before the end. In extra time, the marker did not move and Fenerbahce went through in the penalty shootout thanks to saves from Volkan DemireHe who stopped the punishments of I protected and Maresca and also failedor Dani Alves.
SHis precedents against other Turkish teams have had mixed results, they fell to Eskişehirspor in the first round of the 1971 Fairs Cup, beat Akhisarspor in the group stage of the 2018 Europa League (6-0, 2-3) and knocked out Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League qualifier in 2017 (1- 2 and 2-2).
