Paul Laso, head coach of Real Madrid Basketball, was taken to a hospital in Madrid after experiencing a heart attack. The club reported that Laso was admitted to University Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja following the incident that occurred earlier today.

Real Madrid CF issued a formal update stating that their coach Pablo Laso had been admitted to the University Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja after suffering a myocardial infarction earlier in the day. Before the third game of the Spanish League semi-final against Baskonia, a teleconference with Laso was scheduled for Monday, ahead of the match set for the following Tuesday in Vitoria. The team indicated that Laso would be under medical observation while doctors performed tests to determine the origin and severity of the heart event.

The 54-year-old coach from Vitoria had no prior documented history of heart problems. He had missed only a handful of games in December after contracting COVID-19 during the pandemic. Eight years earlier, in June 2014, he had to officiate under wheelchair assistance due to an Achilles tendon injury.

In this update, Laso was reported to be stable as doctors continued assessments. On the day of the incident, he appeared in the press room after the second game against Baskonia, which Real Madrid won to take a 2-0 lead. He then went home early in the morning after experiencing symptoms and was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment.

In the interim, Chus Mateo, the first assistant coach, was prepared to lead the team in game three of the semi-finals, scheduled for next Tuesday in Vitoria against Baskonia, should Laso be unavailable due to medical evaluations.
