The Argentinian tomorrow will pass Luis as the coach with the most games in charge of the colchoneros
Diego Pablo Simeone he continues to crush brands as coach of Atlético de Madrid.
A few weeks ago, he broke Miguel Muñoz’s record as a coach for most consecutive games in charge of the same team.
Well, this weekend the Argentinian is going to beat Luis Aragones and he becomes the coach with the most games on the mattress bench. Taking advantage of such a special date, Cholo has dedicated an emotional letter to another great legend of his club.
Simeone has always regarded Luis as a key figure in his career. He was his coach at Sevilla in 93-94 when he told the wise man that he had an offer from Atleti. “What are you waiting to go?” Luis replied. This Saturday, nearly three decades later, Diego Pablo will surpass Aragonés’ 612 appearances as manager of the rojiblancos, more than enough reason to remember his figure with affection and respect.
Coaches with the most games focused on Atlético
- Diego Pablo Simeone 613 matches
- Luis Aragones 612 games
- Ricardo Zamora 206 games
- Radomir Antic 189 matches
- Javier Aguirre 131 matches
- Helenio Herrera 120 matches
Simeone’s letter to Luis Aragones
“Dear and eternal Luis
You know I’m not much of a fan of showing this kind of sensation in public, but today I want to do it. I want to tell you that I begin this letter with almost tears in my eyes and an enormous sense of emotion, but above all respect.
It’s hard for me to believe that tomorrow I’ll surpass the number of games, 612, we share today as the director of our beloved Atleti. It is certainly a day I will never forget. As I will never forget that other day, during our time together in Sevilla, you as a coach and me as a player, I told him that Atlético de Madrid wanted to sign me. His reply was quick, “And what are you waiting to go?” Almost 29 years have passed since then, Luis, but even then I could feel that love and passion he had for this club, and thanks to people like you, many of us have inherited it.
Tomorrow I will sit on that bench that he has given us so much pleasure on and that I am allowed to occupy today. I think about it and it sounds unreal, but I am proud to tell you that I feel very privileged to continue to walk your path, our path. I wanted to tell you that I just did my best all these years.
You know me and you know that my responsibility and my dedication are the greatest in my life. And that I do and will continue to do so with the greatest enthusiasm and the greatest respect for this club and all the athletic fans who continue to give me so much love. Because we are lucky enough to belong to a family, the athletic family, which in itself characterizes a way of life. My thanks to them will never be enough.
I’ve been very lucky all this time, Luis. I was lucky to have always had players who showed hunger, dedication, dedication and most importantly who trusted and believed our idea, who followed us. We know, between you and me, this is about the hardest thing to accomplish in our profession.
I am also lucky to have been able to have teammates by my side who have made me a better coach, you know how important it is to have a good coaching staff like the one who has always accompanied me. And all those people within our club who feel identified with our project and who enrich our work every day.
And of course none of this would have been possible without the determination and confidence of Miguel Ángel Gil, Enrique Cerezo and the rest of the leaders who are with us today and support us. Luis, my philosophy on all fours is still stronger than ever, because it is thanks to all of them that we are here today.
Dear and eternal Luis, the values of people like you, and those of so many others this club has left us, are what move us every day to keep competing and give it our all. I know that Atleti was your life and you know that Atleti is also mine, that’s why I didn’t want to let this moment go unnoticed, because I know that today only you can understand me”.
