Why the 2022-2023 Copa del Rey semi-finals are a tour and not a single game
In the 2019-2020 season, the Royal Spanish Football Federation changed the format of the Copa del Rey, which has since been contested by 112 teams starting to compete in the first round, playing all qualifiers in one match on the field until the quarter-finals of the rival from the lower category or in the order determined by the draw, as the case may be. However, the league system changes in the semi-finals, where they are played in a doubles match with first and second legs.
The RFEF explains the decision in the basis of the competition: “The semi-finals are played, in a double match, by the clubs that win the quarter-finals, paired by pure drawing, in any case the order of fields, the same as that of the extraction of the balls, provided they meet the minimum requirements set by the RFEF. The two finalists will be entitled to participate in the Spanish Super Cup tournament.”
It also adds that the qualifiers played over two legs will apply the following provisions:
- The club with the greatest goal difference in favor after regulation time of the match is declared the winner, counting both the number achieved and the number received in the two meetings.
- If the goal difference were the same, the winner would be the one who scored the most goals in the opposing team’s field.
- If the tie continues, a 30-minute extra period will be played in two parts of 15 minutes each, with the rule that any tie on goals scored during regulation time will be decided in favor of the visiting team.
- At the end of extra time, if the tie continues, five penalty kicks are launched by each team, for a common goal, alternating one and the other in the launches, with whoever scores the most goals in the five launches declared the winner .
- If it remains a tie, they will each continue to shoot a penalty until, after they both make the same amount, one of them has scored a little more.
