Not all leagues have embraced the help of technology at the same rate. The Cup del Rey For example, 2022-2023 does not yet have video arbitration in the first rounds.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation and its General Assembly approved a complete format change four seasons ago so that the game would be played in a single match and played by teams of different categories, with integration and giving more opportunities to modest clubs. But the facilities of some of these clubs do not have the conditions to install the VAR.
Will there be VAR in the Copa del Rey 2022-2023 or not and when will it be used?
The use of VAR technology in the first cup rounds is not foreseen. In previous seasons, VAR began to be used in the round of 16, a round in which there are probably already very few teams that do not play in the RFEF First, Second or First Division and do not have this technological system installed.
For the 2022-23 edition of the Cup, the RFEF has arranged for VAR to come into action from the quarter-finals, when only eight teams are left in the tournament. This round will be played on January 23, one week after the round of 16 has been played.
