The song was originally composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for the musical Carousel, which premiered in 1945. the song is used to comfort one of the characters after a suicide and it was also sung at the end of the musical’s performance, giving it more relevance.

Since then it has been interpreted and covered by all kinds of artists like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Barbra Streisand, Doris Day, Nina Simone, The Three Tenors, Louis Armstrong, Die Toten Hosen, The Adicts, Los Fastidios or Il Divo.

The Liverpool group Gerry & The Pacemakers also covered it and made it a hit in the UK, where it climbed to No. 1 on the sales charts on 26 October 1963. Liverpool fans began singing it as a sign of their loyalty to the club and it became so famous that it eventually became the entity’s anthem.
