The legend and former Valencia captain arrives at the club to try and avoid an ever-growing relegation.

At this point in this infamous horror novel, even the most innocent know that the problem with Valencia Club de Fútbol is not the coach. It’s not now, and it never was. A club that has had no sports structure since September 2019 cannot bear all the burden on one person. We know it and Meriton knows it, even if they want to show us that they don’t.

Valencia’s mismanagement is such that the possibility of relegation to the Second Division is more than real this time. They have destroyed the club and it will take a lot to repair all the damage done, certainly a lot more time than they invested in blowing up one of Spain’s greats.

Signing of Rubén Baraja by Valencia: how many years of contract will he sign and his profile as a coach

We’re on our way to nine years since Meriton Holdings, led by Peter Lim, acquired Valencia. That is the time negligent managers have taken to blow up an age-old club, certainly the fourth in Spain by history and titles.

The epilogue to all this nonsense vaudeville seems increasingly clear that it’s going to be a decline. In the streets of Valencia, people have been hearing for years that “if not this year, then next year” and there is a good chance that the parish will eventually be proven right.

People are tired of it, dulled and sometimes even seem resigned. They don’t want them here, but deep down they know they are not leaving and all that remains is to fight for a shield inherited from grandparents to parents and children.

Why Valencia CF was relegated to the Second Division in 1986

And in all this chaos, Rubén Baraja appears on the horizon, a club legend to whom Meriton gives the team to try and save himself. But let no one be fooled, the chosen one is Baraja as he is a beloved man among the fans and serves as a smokescreen and shield for his owner. His resume as a coach doesn’t really matter, the only intention is to parry the blow a little bit so that, sure and even if he saves the team, he will pull someone’s rope in June and follow the established plan of carnage the club.

Valencia can avoid relegation, hopefully they will, but what seems more difficult is that they can avoid Meriton and Peter Lim. There goes the penultimate shield of the Singaporean. Good luck to Baraja and Valencia. They’ll need it.
