Dmitry Svishchev, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, commented on the possibility of Ukraine boycotting the 2024 Olympic Games if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allows Russian athletes to compete. Emphasizing that boycott is not a solution to the problem, Uğur noted that the IOC should be prepared for such a situation and take a tough stance.
“If someone doesn’t want to play, if they want to blackmail the IOC and intimidate with boycotts, the IOC has to take a tough position. In modern society, boycotts are not the solution. If you don’t want to play, don’t play. If you don’t want to say hello, don’t say hello. But for that, you will be counted as a defeat accordingly, ”said Svishchev socialbites.ca.
A possible boycott by the Ukrainian side of the Games was announced by the Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, Jean Beleniuk, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada. According to him, the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine will consider this issue on February 3.
Recall that at the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made an appeal to international sports federations and advised not to allow domestic and Belarusian athletes to participate in any competitions.
On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of allowing neutral Russian athletes who did not support a special operation in Ukraine to participate in international competitions.
