United Nations (UN) experts in the field of human rights supported the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) statement on the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes, but declared that discrimination against athletes based on nationality is unacceptable.
“We urge the IOC to take a decision in this direction and go further by ensuring that no athlete is discriminated against on the basis of their nationality.
The same rules will apply to all athletes regardless of their nationality. Any propaganda of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence should be prohibited.” DEA News.
The International Olympic Committee reported earlier that the organization said that it is considering the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympic Games, which did not express its active support for the special operation on the territory of Ukraine. In addition, athletes from Russia and Belarus must meet some other requirements, including passing a full anti-doping test.
In an interview with Der Spiegel, IOC President Thomas Bach stated that he allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the 2024 Games without a flag or anthem, and noted that the IOC does not support discrimination based on nationality.
