All quarterfinalists of the women’s singles tournament at the Australian Open have been announced.
To qualify for the semi-finals will compete:
Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) – Elena Ostapenko (Latvia);
Jessica Pegula (USA) – Victoria Azarenka (Belarus);
Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) – Magda Linett (Poland);
Arina Sobolenko (Belarus) – Donna Vekic (Croatia).
Earlier, the organizers of the tournament had banned the flags of Russia and Belarus in the stands of AO-2023, following the complaint of the Ukrainian spectators. Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia Vasily Miroshnichenko had previously expressed his anger at the presence of a supporter carrying the Russian flag on the spectator’s podium during the first round match of the Australian Open tennis championship between Ukraine’s Kateryna Beindl and Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players play in international tournaments with neutral status – without specifying countries, flags and anthems.
