The team of Ché, Real Madrid’s semi-final rival, knows what it’s like to lift the trophy.

Valencia will face Real Madrid next Wednesday, in the first of the two semi-finals of the 2023 Spanish Super Cup. The Ché team already knows what it’s like to lift that trophy, although a long time has passed since the last -and only- time he did it.

How many Spanish Super Cups has Valencia won in its history?

When Valencia won their only title in the Spanish Super Cup, the new millennium had not yet begun. And it is that the Valencianistas got this trophy for the only time in 1999, when they beat FC Barcelona in the old tournament format (league champion versus cup champion in a doubles match).

The 1999 Spanish Super Cup was played over two legs between 8 and 15 August, pitting 1998–99 Primera División champions Barcelona against 1998–99 Copa del Rey champions Valencia.

The team led by Héctor Cúper won the title on their first appearance at the time, and they did so by beating Barça 4:3 on aggregate. In the first leg, Valencia won 1-0 at Mestalla with a goal from Argentinian Claudio ‘Piojo’ López, while the second leg was a great game ending 3-3 at Camp Nou with goals from Dutchman Kluivert (2) and Ronald de Boer for the Catalans, and David Albelda, Juan Sánchez and Farinós for the Valencians. Barça was directed by Louis Van Gaal.

Valencia would lose the Super Cup in their next three appearances: in 2002 against Deportivo La Coruña (4–0 on aggregate), in 2004 against Zaragoza (3–2) and in 2008 against Real Madrid (6–5).
