THE STORY: FROM THE TROPHY TO THE CUP
The Jules Rimet Trophy was the original award for World Cup winners and was named in honor of former FIFA President Jules Rimet, who helped create the competition. It was made of gold plated sterling silver with a blue lapis lazuli base, was 35 centimeters long and weighed 3.8 kilograms. It consisted of an octagonal cup held by a winged figure representing Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.
During World War II, the vice-president of FIFA and president of the Italian Football Federation, Italian Ottorino Barassi, hid it in a shoebox under his bed so that the Nazis would not confiscate it.
The Jules Rimet was stolen twice: the first time on March 20, 1966 at an exhibition in London. A week later he was found by a dog named “Pickles” lying in some bushes in Upper Norwood and wrapped in newspapers.
In 1970 Brazil won it for a third time and claimed the right to keep it, but 13 years later the trophy was stolen again in Rio de Janeiro and was never heard from again. It is believed that the four thieves, later arrested, melted down the statuette. The Brazilian Football Federation commissioned a gold replica to replace the lost trophy.
In 1974, the FIFA World Cup found its presentation, which is maintained to this day.
