Iranian authorities will execute a football player for participating in protests

The judiciary of the Islamic Republic plans to hang the 26-year-old football player.

In early autumn, numerous protests were held in Iran over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the deputy police officer for wearing the “wrong” headscarf. In connection with these events, the women’s human rights organization Open Stadiums applied to the International Football Federation (FIFA) with a request to prevent the Iranian national team from participating in the 2022 World Cup. The team nevertheless participated in the tournament and finished in the group stage.

At the end of November, Iranian authorities arrested Voriya Ghafuri, a former player of the national football team and defender of the Fulad club, for supporting anti-government protests. According to the statement in the Iranian media, the athlete was arrested for “insulting the national football team and making propaganda against the government”.
