Washington Capitals NHL head coach Peter Laviolette commented on team captain Alexander Ovechkin’s game in the win against the Vancouver Canucks, where the Russian player scored the first two goals in the first period.
“He was really good in the first period and I think we played great as a team in the first period, so it was nice to set that ground.” quotes Official site of the NHL’s Lavioletta.
“He was definitely a leader. We knew we had to have a good first period to play well, and for that we need the best players.”
Ovechkin’s support has put Ovechkin in the highest spot in NHL history in away goals against Wayne Gretzky. Now Alexander the Great has 403 away goals.
Washington won 5-1 against Vancouver, ending their unfortunate streak of six away games in a row. In the process, the Capitals have won three of their last four regular season games.
