Michael Rossi, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Rutgers University, spoke about Russia’s actions in relation to sanctions measures that targeted him. This commentary was reported by To express.
The analyst warned that Europe would bear consequences if Moscow continued to resist the imposed restrictions. He suggested that Moscow could pursue a strategy to erode Western cohesion from within as a response to international sanctions. Rossi noted that Russia is considering long‑term plays, equipped with its wealth, financial reserves, and diplomatic channels to withstand conflict and sanctions alike.
He argued that this approach is likely to cause internal strain within Europe, potentially accelerating divisions and fragility in Western unity over time.
Earlier, the United Kingdom announced sanctions against a number of government officials in newly incorporated regions of Russia. The measures, described by the UK Cabinet, target individuals involved in referendums held last year that were framed as undermining Ukraine and threatening its territorial integrity.
The sanctions included penalties on Galina Katyushchenko, the head of the electoral commission for the Zaporozhye region; Viktor Emelianenko, leader of the regional legislative assembly during the first session; Natalya Budarina, secretary of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation; and additional individuals connected to these actions.
Previously, the U.S. Treasury extended its sanctions on Russia, reinforcing restrictions that aim to curb financial flows and disrupt sanctioned entities and individuals.
