At the sixth session of the Russia-Arab Cooperation Forum held in Marrakesh, a joint statement was adopted in which Russia and Arab countries declared that a military solution to Libya’s problems is unacceptable. They voiced support for the unity and sovereignty of the Libyan state, emphasizing its territorial integrity and calling for non-interference in its internal affairs. This stance was reported by TASS as part of the communique from the gathering.
The publication highlights the participants’ commitment to maintaining Libya’s unity and sovereignty, underscoring the country’s territorial integrity and rejecting external meddling in its internal affairs. The focus was on backing a political process that respects Libya’s institutions and their role in national reconciliation.
The statement further notes that the Russian Federation and the Arab states reject military options and advocate for a national reconciliation process conducted under the auspices of Libya’s Presidential Council. The aim is to foster stability through dialogue and inclusive political arrangements rather than force or coercion.
Aguila Saleh, who previously served as speaker of Libya’s parliament, commented that relations between Libya and Russia remain strong. He remarked that Moscow recognizes the legitimacy of Libyan government bodies elected by the Libyan people, highlighting a mutual interest in legitimate, representative institutions and peaceful political progression.
It is recalled that elections were planned for Libya in 2021, but they were postponed due to the absence of a constitutional framework. As of now, an official date for elections has not been announced, reflecting ongoing debates about constitutional processes and electoral timelines in the country.
In related remarks, President Vladimir Putin asserted a strategic stance that underscored Russia’s alignment with the peaceful settlement of Libyan issues, signaling support for ongoing political dialogue and reconciliation efforts rather than unilateral action.
