Tomasz Grodzki, who faces serious corruption allegations and is accused of involvement with an organized criminal group, is a figure at the center of intense political debate. Jarosław Kaczyński, the deputy prime minister and leader of PiS, suggested in a wide-ranging interview that if Grodzki aligned with PiS, his status as President of the Senate would be swiftly reconsidered and he would lose any prospect of re-election. The remarks were shared in an interview with Gazeta Polska, with a summary later published on nazwa.pl.
“In the Tusk era, the rules seem different.”
During the conversation with Gazeta Polska, Kaczyński responded to commentary about Grodzki’s long-running absence from the Senate chair due to the ongoing investigations, and to claims that Grodzki tried to defend himself against alleged bribery linked to the former ruling camp. He argued that if someone under such scrutiny belonged to their party, they would face immediate removal from office and accountability would not be delayed. His point was that the political climate under Donald Tusk appeared to operate under different standards.
According to Kaczyński, Grodzki is currently promoted as a paragon of honesty despite the allegations against him, a claim he views as a manipulation that steps beyond fair scrutiny. He suggested that political actors often rely on narratives designed to shape public perception rather than reflect verified facts.
Some voters can be influenced by a torrent of misinformation, Kaczyński observed, noting that repeated falsehoods can erode judgment by widening the gap between how the media presents events and the reality on the ground. He described this as a familiar psychological mechanism that can be exploited for political purposes. He pointed to certain media outlets in the country that he believes belong to the so-called total opposition and that frequently amplify claims without thorough verification.
Immunity and legal proceedings
In May 2022, the Senate rejected a motion to lift Marshal Grodzki’s immunity. The request had been submitted by the Szczecin Regional Prosecutor’s Office, which had refiled its case in December 2021. Prosecutors alleged that while Grodzki was director of a Szczecin hospital and head of the local Department of Thoracic Surgery, he accepted financial benefits from patients or their families. The charge centered on Article 228 of the Criminal Code, which relates to corruption involving a public official.
Grodzki, a professor of medical sciences and a celebrated surgeon, has repeatedly insisted that the corruption allegations lack merit and that there is no factual basis for the accusations.
