The socialist group in the Diputación de Alicante already faced repayment of 14,500 euros after the intervention report outlined unjustified costs claimed during an external inspection appointed by the provincial authority. The PSOE filed a contentious appeal against the supervisory body’s decision to reimburse the entire 14,500 euros for expenses deemed unjustified between 2015 and 2018. With votes from the PP and Ciudadanos and against the PSOE and Compromís, the provincial assembly ratified the decision to refuse the review request and analysis of the funds transferred to the PSOE’s provincial political group.
The socialists decided to pursue the matter in court, disputing the audit’s stated reasons. Although PSOE had already refunded the 14,500 euros, they hoped to preserve the funds through judicial channels. Toni Frances criticized the audit for applying criteria he described as biased toward the PP, pointing to a broader pattern in the control of expenses. He noted that nearly all mobile expenses and bills for all venues were approved, while about half of some common expenses were questioned. A spokesperson for the socialist group emphasized that the Diputación government, together with the PP and Cs, had escalated renewal applications to the auditor and would not withdraw the challenge. Frances argued that the disputed costs were fully justified, questioning why a training course or disputes involving MPs and legislators would be treated differently from other items.
Audit by Diputación forces PP to repay 45,000 euros and PSPV 14,500 euros
The external audit commissioned by the Alicante County Council to review accounts from 2015 to 2018 also confirmed that the PP had to return 45,000 euros to public coffers, representing roughly 10 percent of the total questionable expenses totaling about 466,000 euros in those years. The PP paid back the amount last summer, but no independent sources were provided to support the repayment. Compromís pursued the matter in court, while the Alicante Prosecutor’s Office filed a suit after not observing irregularities in recent times.
Additionally, the audit indicated that Loyalty had to refund a thousand euros following a partial appeal. Only a portion of this sum remained at issue. Like the PSOE, the Loyalty group maintained that its expenditures were fully justified.
Controversy within the party over Diputación funds used by the PP group
Former mayor of the CS and later a defector raised objections about approximately 4,000 euros, with sources indicating these funds were rejected. Among the highlighted items, the most notable claim involved a 90,000-euro request associated with a training program for a company that reportedly had no representation at the time. The announcement drew attention to concerns about the use and accountability of funds within the PP group in Diputación, sparking broader debate about fiscal responsibility and oversight across the provincial administration.
