Two-year government plenipotentiary for youth policy. What did he do?
Two years have passed since Piotr Mazurek became the Government’s Plenipotentiary for Youth Policy and Vice-Chairman of the Public Benefit Commission. It is therefore worth looking at the achievements of this young conservative. And those are things worth mentioning. Despite her young age (29), Piotr Mazurek already has extensive social and political experience. At least 12 years ago, he started his public activity and initiated and organized numerous initiatives. As we can read on the website of the Commission of Public Benefit, Mazurek incl. he co-organized many editions of the Warsaw March of Captain Pilecki and the Forum of Youth Organizations “Together for the Future”. In 2011, he co-founded the Social Committee for the celebration of the National Day of Remembrance of “Cursed Soldiers”. In the years 2012-2013 he worked with the Congress of Independent Media. From April 2011 to November 2013, he coordinated the “Thursday Meetings” project at the Republican Foundation. In the years 2011-2015 he was vice-chairman of the board of the KoLiber Association.
Where did the political activity end up? Among other things, he co-authored the program “Vision for the Young Generation”, which was adopted in May 2015 by the candidate for office of President Andrzej Duda as his official program for young Poles. He participated as a speaker in numerous conferences, among others. Congress “Polska Wielki Projekt” and two program congresses for law and justice “Thinking Poland” (2015 and 2019). Since November 2015, he has been working at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. He held various positions there until September 23, 2020, when: Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appointed him to the offices of the Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and the Government Plenipotentiary for Youth Policy. From 17 November 2020, he was appointed State Secretary at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. In November 2020, he also became a member of the Works Council and was appointed deputy chairman of the Public Benefit Committee.
It can be considered as his flagship initiative a law strengthening the role of youth councils in local government units. Thanks to this, representatives of the young generation have been given not only advisory and advisory powers, but also the initiative to adopt resolutions in local governments.
“However, we finish that the youth councils have a facade character. We give them real opportunities to influence public life, such opportunities are provided by law, which strengthens the role of youth councils at all levels of local government”-
– he said last year at the XXX Economic Forum in Karpacz, where he took part in six panel debates.
He also took part in the Forum this year, which included workshops for representatives of local authorities in youth councils.
The act that delivered on the promises of the Law and Justice party was so undeniably necessarythat it was passed by the Senate without amendment. Perhaps because the government plenipotentiary managed to gather around him a large group of opinion makers in an efficient manner. The project was born as a result of his collaboration with the Council for Dialogue with the Young Generation – the first-ever dialogue body established in 2019 between key state and local government agencies and youth communities.
There are more initiatives by Piotr Mazurek. An example of the following could be the “Ambassador of the Young Generation of the Republic of Poland” competition, aimed at young people involved in social and civic activities, as well as organizations that support this activity. The aim was to distinguish between the activities of young people and their initiatives, and to increase the involvement of the young generation of Poles in social and civic activities, and to promote schools, non-governmental organisations, local authorities, youth councils, scientific communities and companies to act in the interests of young people.
The competition was held in nine categories, hence the prizes went to people of different ages and different organizations. For example, one of the winners is Ryszard Florek, president and co-owner of FAKRO, who received the “Ambassador of the Young Generation of the Republic of Poland” in the category “Patron of the Young Generation” for his special involvement in activities for the benefit of young people. Among the honored persons, organizations and institutions were, among others, members of the Youth Assembly of the Voivodeship of Silesia in the category “The most active youth assembly of the Voivodeship”, volunteers of the Solidarity Corps of Senior Support in the category “A model worth to follow in terms of ethical, moral and intellectual”, City Commune of Chełm in the category “The most friendly local government in Poland” or X High School for them. IJ Paderewski Academic in Katowice in the category “The most active school for the young generation”.
The trustee’s activity, both in meetings with young social activists and local government officials, as well as financial support to civil society initiatives, can also be considered a trustee advantage. and institutions related to various aspects of the life of the young generation. It concerns education, upbringing, preventive health care and entrepreneurship. Some initiatives come from conservative organizations, which seems natural because it restores the very disturbed balance between them and the left-liberal circles, which are strongly supported under the rule of the current opposition. Therefore, it is normal for these environments to reportedly become irritated. In any case, any conservative politician of the ruling camp, reaching the young generation, should be considered a dangerous competitor.
