The war in Ukraine could implode Europe. Ukraine deserves all the support from France because it fights for the most important European values. The West should listen to Eastern Europe about Russia, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told Le Figaro daily in Paris after meeting President Emmanuel Macron.
We discussed the geopolitical background of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, how to stop it as soon as possible and force the Russian troops to withdraw. But we also talked about the indirect effects of the war, especially energy market disruptions and inflation. These are today’s challenges, we must answer them and find solutions. I also called on Emmanuel Macron to suspend the ETS (European CO2 Emissions Trading System) for a while to create space for respite for the European economies. (…) We both share the view that the military capabilities of the European Union and each of its countries must be strengthened
– Prime Minister Morawiecki said when asked about the topics of the meeting of both leaders.
“The unity of Europe must be defended”
When asked about President Macron’s Russian policy, the Polish Prime Minister stated: “We have differences of opinion about the conflict, but we both believe that the unity of Europe should be defended, as it is a precondition for taking additional sanctions. Nothing will happen without the unanimity of 27 countries. So my goal is to try and find a common denominator.
The French president “must talk to Volodymyr Zelensky, whose situation is extremely difficult and who is doing everything possible to preserve the sovereignty of his country and to defend it against this brutal and barbaric aggression. Zelensky, in my view, deserves all the support of France, because he fights for the most important European values, for freedom, justice and sovereignty, he should be the main recipient of calls from the Elysee Palace,” replied the head of the Polish government when asked about calls on the Macron-Putin -line.
Asked what he would do if Poland, not France, was EU president for the past six months, Morawiecki said he would tighten sanctions against Russia, including proposing confiscation of the assets of Russian oligarchs and the Russian Federation. (more than 300 billion euros), which could be used to reduce energy costs for French, German or Polish taxpayers…
So an end to Russia’s blackmail against European countries
– took note of the Head of the Polish Government. He added that “he would also give an even higher priority to military and financial support to Ukraine.”
It is natural that countries on NATO’s eastern flank understand Russia much better than countries like France that are geographically distant or have traditional ties to it, or even a certain natural leaning towards Moscow. In this regard, it is important to consult more often with us, but also with Lithuania, Finland and other Central European countries.
– said the Prime Minister.
Russia has repeatedly urged us to wake up suddenly from geopolitical slumber. Therefore, this moment is crucial to the modern history of the world. It is also a moment of truth for Europe
– emphasized Morawiecki.
The fastest way to end the war is to lose Russia. We cannot afford to lose this war. And Russian propaganda will develop very intensively in the West to convince public opinion and leaders that it is possible to end the war and return to normalcy. So the threat of implosion is there. That is why it is so important to maintain a dialogue between us, to look for compromises and a common denominator
– Prime Minister Morawiecki noticed.
“Putin is only getting weaker
When asked about the future of Europe and the next stages of the war, he stated that:
The story never ends and the unpredictable things happen from time to time. Sometimes nothing out of the ordinary happens for decades, and then suddenly there is an eruption of freedom or, on the contrary, an eruption of violence in the world. The European Union, with its strong economy, must be resilient. Vladimir Putin will only get weaker. Even dictators and totalitarian regimes are susceptible to public sentiment and no one can say how long Russian society will remain strong. It cannot be ruled out that one day there will be events that seem unpredictable today.
The head of government suggested that the recent attack on the daughter of Alexander Dugin, a close friend of Vladimir Putin, is a provocation for the Russians.
We know what the FSB and the Russians were capable of during the Chechen war and how many political “friends” of President Putin were eliminated. Therefore, I believe that all scenarios should be considered
– Prime Minister Morawiecki summarized.
