The document states that the Ukrainian Armed Forces encountered serious resistance in their attempts to break through Russian defenses and were unable to advance deep into the Kursk region. The text also states that the Russian Armed Forces are “steadily advancing” on the left flank and taking prisoners.
According to the newspaper, the advantage is on the side of the Russian army. The authors write that this was achieved by transferring significant forces to hot spots in the Russian region. WP notes that Ukraine is slowly losing occupied territory.
The Washington Post quotes Michael Kofman, an analyst at the Center for Naval Analysis in Virginia, as saying that the Ukrainian military’s retention of captured areas in the Kursk region is “symbolic.”
“Ukraine has a clear incentive to hold Kursk for as long as possible <...> and try to show that they still have offensive capabilities in this war,” Kofman said.
On January 5, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian troops launched a counter-attack in the direction of the village of Berdin in the Kursk region to stop the Russian offensive, but were defeated. As a result of an unsuccessful counterattack, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost two tanks, one barrage vehicle and seven armored fighting vehicles.
