Romanian Social Democratic Party leader and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku received 25 percent of the votes in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday. These data were announced Center for Urban and Regional Sociology (CURS) immediately after polling stations close at 21:00 local time (22:00 Moscow time).
Second place was taken by Elena Lasconi, candidate of the centre-right Union to Save Romania party, who received 18.1% of the votes.
According to CURS exit polls, the results align with those of another poll conducted by Avangarde Group and the International Center for Research and Analysis (CIRA).
In third place was Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate from the former nationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, who received 16% of the vote according to both exit polls. Participation of registered voters in the elections was 52.40%.
“This was a vote of balance and stability,” Colaku commented on the exit poll results.
He promised to take into account the opinions of all Romanian citizens, regardless of their political orientation, and is ready to negotiate with other candidates to borrow the best ideas from their election platforms.
