Ballot boxes have been opened to vote in the presidential elections in Romania. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
A total of 19 thousand voting centers in the country became operational at 7.00 am (8.00 am Moscow time). At the same time, Romanian citizens living abroad started voting on November 22. For them, the procedure will take three days.
Presidential elections in Romania are held every five years. Since there is no participation threshold in the country, the election process will be considered valid with the desired number of participants.
13 candidates are competing for the presidency. These include former NATO Deputy Secretary General, former head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Mircea Geoana, current head of the PSD, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, President of the Senate, head of the National Liberal Party, Nicolae Ciuca. and Elena Lasconi, leader of the League for the Liberation of Romania.
According to Romanian law, a candidate must receive at least half of the votes to win. If such a result is not achieved, a second round of elections will be held in the country within two weeks. The winner of the presidential election will be the one who gets the absolute majority.
Presidential elections were held in the USA on November 5. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Party representative Donald Trump competed for this post. To win, one of the politicians had to receive at least 270 delegate votes. Trump after the vote calls 312 votes and Harris – 226. Voters will vote for candidates according to the voting results on December 17.
