Szymon Hołownia was booed when he arrived at the main celebrations that took place in Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square on the occasion of National Independence Day.
The main celebrations associated with the 106th anniversary of regaining independence took place in Warsaw.
In the afternoon in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the square. Piłsudski, a ceremonial dismissal of the guard took place with the participation of President Andrzej Duda.
The most important ceremonies were attended by, among others: Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia. The recordings posted on the Internet show that he was received coolly by the assembled Poles.
The gathered people booed Szymon Hołownia when he arrived at the party place. There was also a well-known slogan attacking the government: “The red crow cannot defeat the eagle.”
Watch the recordings:
Hołownia spoke up
Szymon Hołownia commented on the issue on social media, attacking people who expressed loud disapproval of his methods of doing politics.
“You could probably get used to it, but somehow you just can’t get used to it,” says General Dominikowski, commander of the Warsaw garrison, as he welcomes me to the ceremony on Piłudski Square. Those who gathered at the barriers thought that Andrzej Duda was arriving, but when they saw me get out of the car, they started crying, insulting, cackling, humming, whistling, which almost sent me to the grave of the unknown soldier brought. Apparently not for the first time (I “experienced” the same thing before at the Powązki Military Cemetery on the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising). Apparently I was not the first that day, as I gather from conversations with other guests at the ceremony. “That’s how it always is,” they said. Later, when the President and I went to lay flowers at the Marshal’s monument, the crowd chanted, “Andrzej Duda! Punishment for Bodnar! Fuck Tusk! Glory to the Heroes! Andrzej Duda! Lock Rudy up!” Etc. Etc. Etc.
– he wrote.
Not that it bothers me every day, but on a day like this? What was there to do? I asked my colleagues for a handful of red and white cotillions and went into the crowd. From the other side of the monument, but also from behind the fence, shouting that “you will burn in hell”, “just don’t cry”, etc. After fifteen minutes we were out of words, hundreds of handshakes, smiles and photos. It turned out that among this crowd of compatriots who came from all over Poland for the holiday, there are literally four noisy people and a silent majority of those who believe that on such a day we can forget about hatred, bile, poison and tribal massacres. and that – whether we agree or not – white and red connect us, as it connects these two colors. And that the respect shown gives strength and joy, it does not leave a hangover.
– he said.
The sighting was later confirmed during a walk along Krakowskie Przedmieście, when on the way to the Open Day in the Sejm we passed dozens of people with flags, on their way to Piłsudski Square or to the Independence March. For an hour in the Sejm, I greeted guests as they entered and took photos with them. Great party atmosphere. No one asked anyone their opinion, we were all just free Poles. So much kindness! Earlier, for an hour and a half motionless on the stand, bathed in all these beautiful words and symbols, I had time to think whether it would be possible to put it together at all. And what price, what national catharsis, will have to be paid for that. And will those who allowed this to happen by puffing themselves up with fancy statements and turning some Poles against others, and living off it, one day be held accountable and punished? That sick polarization is everywhere? Yes, that’s true. But we live in times where the “other people would drink and fight too” argument is a bit weak. What should we do so that the silent majority I met today can effectively overshadow the aggressive minority in a few to ten years? Because we could afford civil wars and celebrations, not with each other but against each other when there was peace outside. Not now. Today I saw again in so many faces, smiles and conversations that Poles are smarter than the politicians they elect. So maybe this is the way: going to people, with people, between people
– concluded Hołownia.
