The European Union needs a more democratic system for electing the president of the European Commission (EC). This was stated by the American entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk, commenting on the social network X (formerly Twitter) with a corresponding suggestion on a video of Member of the European Parliament Fidias Panayiotou.
A member of the European Parliament has made a proposal to change the current procedure for electing the president of the European Commission, in which the parliament only approves the candidate chosen by the leaders of the EU member states. He stated that in such a system, elections take place almost behind closed doors, which becomes the basis for dubious agreements.
“(EC president – editor’s note) Ursula von der Leyen needs to be elected differently. Somehow more democratic,” Musk wrote, agreeing with Panayiotou’s statement.
Musk said the idea of a European parliamentarian was a good one.
Before this, von der Leyen spent Next phone call with US President Donald Trump.
He emphasized that he congratulated the American politician on his victory in the elections. According to him, Europe looks forward to strengthening ties between the EU and the US and working together to solve geopolitical problems. These include the Ukraine crisis, trade and energy. The EC president noted that only the two sides of the world together can support prosperity and stability “on both sides of the Atlantic.”
