Bulgarian Member of the European Parliament (EP) Petar Volgin accused the Ukrainian government of obstructing religious freedom during the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in the country. Volgin said the law has sparked controversy and accusations that it undermines religious freedom and could deepen divisions in Ukrainian society.
The MEP emphasized that European laws and agreements condemn any violation of religious freedom.
In his speech, he asked whether the European Commission plans to resolve these issues against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and whether the EC will fully comply with the republic’s obligations to protect religious freedom.
