The head of the Ministry of Justice, Attorney General Adam Bodnar, announced that he had signed a request to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to lift the immunity of Confederation member Grzegorz Braun. In January his immunity was lifted by the Polish Sejm, but he was later elected a member of the European Parliament.
Yesterday I signed a request to Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, to waive Grzegorz Braun’s immunity (…) This is new information, but an old case
– Bodnar said on Wednesday in an interview with Wirtualna Polska.
He recalled that in this case immunity had already been lifted by the Sejm, but Grzegorz Braun was subsequently elected to the European Parliament.
We decided that in this situation it was still necessary to ask the European Parliament for permission to lift immunity so that there would be no formal doubts.
– he added.
Charges against Braun
The Sejm decided to revoke Braun’s immunity in January this year, and in April, during an investigation at the Warsaw Public Prosecutor’s Office, Braun was accused of, among other things: insulting a group of people on the premises of the Sejm on religious grounds. It involved extinguishing Hanukkah candles with a fire extinguisher, which took place in December 2023. Braun was also charged in connection with the situation at the German Historical Institute, where he blocked a lecture on the Holocaust, and an incident in court in Krakow, from where he took out a Christmas tree placed there by the judges, and then threw it in the trash.
Other accusations related to violating the physical integrity of the former head of the Ministry of Health, Łukasz Szumowski, in connection with the performance of his official duties, the use of physical force to force him to behave in a certain way , and vilifying Szumowski through the mass media that he was under the influence of alcohol, which could have humiliated him in public opinion.
Braun pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and declined to provide explanations.
